This Room Just Feels Different
Some built-ins hold things. This one holds the entire room together.
This Jacksonville living room had a wall and a vision. The clients wanted a space that did everything: display, storage, TV, fireplace, ambiance. Not four separate pieces of furniture arranged to approximate that. One built-in, designed from the ground up, that handled all of it.
That's what Jonah built.
The unit runs the full width of the wall and reaches the ceiling, capped with crown molding that ties it cleanly to the architecture of the room. At the center, a large TV is mounted into a dedicated niche framed by a custom fluted slat panel surround, with blue LED strip lighting that frames the screen and creates depth without competing with the picture. It's a detail borrowed from high-end media room design, executed here in a residential living room because the client wanted it done right.
Flanking the TV on both sides are six open display niches, three per side, each fitted with recessed puck lighting inside. The lighting turns what could have been simple open shelves into something closer to gallery display. Whatever goes in those niches gets shown off.
Below sits a floating lower cabinet built around a wide electric fireplace insert. Shaker doors, black bar hardware, pull-out shelves inside. Every inch of the lower cabinet is functional. Every detail of the upper unit is intentional.
This is what a custom built-in is supposed to do. Not just fill a wall. Become the reason the room works.
The TV has a place. The fireplace has a place. The things worth displaying have a place. The things that just need to be stored have a place. And all of it looks like it was always meant to be exactly where it is, because it was built exactly for where it is.
No two spaces are the same. Neither are Jonah's built-ins.
